Finnsheep are a multi-purpose breed. They are raised for meat, wool and pelts. A primary use has been in cross breeding programs to increase the lambing percentage of flocks as they typically have triplet lambs and often quadruplets. We have also had quintuplets and sextuplets at Jeruth Farm. The Finnsheep are from Finland. They are available with white fleece, grey, brown, black, fawn and pied. The wool has beautiful luster and softness from shades from white through black. The wool is highly praised and sought after by hand spinners as it has a long staple, crimp, 24 to 31 microns and blends well with other fibers.
The meat is lean with a light delicate flavor. The Finnsheep are capable of year round breeding and lambing so the meat is available year round. They are a light boned, medium sized sheep and the meat to bone ratio is very good. The meat is low fat with mild flavor and tenderness. Rams mature at four to eight months and ewes are bred to lamb at 12 months of age. Market weight occurs by 7 months.
Finnsheep have extremely friendly natures and ewes possess an outstanding maternal attitude - together with an ease of lambing and ability to feed up to quadruplets without assistance. They also have a gentle nature which enables easy handling, are adaptable to a wide range of climates, are good foragers, and are a perfect addition to small farms as well as large herds.
